Tonight Special: 0300z The End of The Dial

Tonight, November 20 0300 UTC (Wednesday 19 November at 10pm Eastern) - We tune in with Garth Mullins about “The End of the Dial” and the future of radio. This program originally aired on CBC earlier this year. Global 24 is pleased to rebroadcast it tonight.

About the Program

Video was supposed to kill the radio star. Now we’re told the internet is going to finish it off. There are budget cuts, radio signals are dropping off the dial and transmitters are being mothballed. But Garth Mullins isn’t ready to pull the plug just yet. He’s been a radio-head from the start, listening to shortwave, working in community radio and now making programs and podcasts. And he’s hearing a radio renaissance.

Garth talks to Elizabeth Hay, author of Late Nights On Air about radio in the north. Digital media scholar Ethan Zuckerman argues that radio is still important in a wired world. Garth also meets up with Ryan McMahon, Anishinaabe comedian and podcast media maker. Ira Glass, host of This American Life, asks if it’s really necessary to make “a radio show that says, aww, radio is great.” Well, this is that show.

We hear the story of El Salvador’s underground Radio Venceremos and the sounds of Cold War Era Shortwave (thanks to Paul Dougherty). Aljaz Pengov Bitenc from Slovenia’s Radio Kaos talks about WWII antifascist transmissions. Radio static art is provided by Anna Friz.

Garth tunes into new online radio voices like 99% Invisible, The Memory Palace, How Sound, Radiolab and Curious City.

Natural radio recordist Stephen P. McGreevy warns of the continuing need for old-school, terrestrial radio, so that we can talk to each other when the grid goes down.

Quick Updates - November 19

November 19, 2014

A quick note to our listeners - we are having some lingering software and bandwith issues that are limited the ability of our producers to move programs to our transmitter.

The result for our listeners is that we will be off schedule at different points in the day.

We are working very hard to fix the issue.

The Fringe Radio Show Set to Air - November 16 UTC

(Hollywood, FL) November 14, 2014 — The Fringe Radio Show with host Pat Daniels is set to go live this Sunday 0100 UTC (Saturday 8pm Eastern) on Global 24 shortwave.

The show is currently heard on KTKK AM630 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Fringe Radio Show covers a myriad of topics on the “Fringe of Reality” - including, UFO sightings in the news, paranormal activity, conspiracy theories, cryptozoology and more. The show is four hours in length and will air LIVE each week. Call-ins are taken live.

According to Daniels, “Being on Terrestrial AM Radio for several years, we are so honored to be a part of Global 24 Radio, and have the opportunity to reach out to a world wide audience, and allow our listeners to have a place where they can tune in, and enjoy Open Minded subject interviews with our guests”.”

“The Fringe Radio Show creates a friendly, opened minded forum for talking about things that are on the fringe. It reminds me of the best of late night AM talk radio. Plus, it’s just fun to think of a live call-in show on shortwave taking calls about UFOs, strange things seen in the night sky, paranormal activity and so much more. Plus, just looking at the UFO question, a recent National Geographic survey found a full 40% of Americans believe in the existence of UFOs and nearly 80% of us believe that our government has kept UFO information secret,” said Phil Workman, general manager of Global 24.
